The Budo Masters

The Budo Masters

The Memoirs of Henry Ellis Sensie – 1957 – 2007

In the past 50 years I have been very fortunate not only meet, but studying with many of the great masters of Budo who have visited the UK and Europe. I would like to record my memories in the hope that someday might be of interest to other members of the Martial Arts.

Kenshiro Abbe Sensei 1915 – 1985: I started my martial arts journey in 1956 in the now famous Hut Dojo. I started with Judo under the direction of Ken Williams Sensei. Abbe Sensei had arrived in the United Kingdom in 1955 at the invitation of the London Judo Society (LJS). Soon became disillusioned with the LJS and join forces with Otani Sensei Matsutaro that eventually lead to the formation of the British Judo Council (BJC) – British Kendo Council (BKC)
Aikido British Council (BAC). Sensei Williams was there with Abbe Sensie the beginning of this exciting period in British history Martial Arts. The new partnership with Abbe Sensei Otani Sensie would a regular visitor to the Hut Dojo. How quickly rename Abbe School of Budo. I first saw Abbe Sensei when he attended a classification in the Cabin. I also realized in this first time I was in the presence of someone very special. Abbe Sensei seemed it was an impressive man. Later became much better known sensei and participate in a conversation, although his English is very poor. Many people today say they have been friends of Abbe Sensei, I never met a person who was a friend of Sensei, we were all privileged students. Aikido and would soon begin in both the Sensei Aikido and judo classes. He also became a regular on the Dojo Sensei Abbe Sandwich own street in Kings Cross. London.
At this point Abbe Sensei was in his early 40 years old and still a force to be treated in randori or competition. I was not in the LJS as the next step, Sensei thought that did not receive due respect for a man of his race, height, align all 31 degrees Dan Judo and walked over the line and told them individually what the technique used in them and whether it would right or left handed, he did just that, down the whole line and beat every grade Dan.
One day when students were all in costume dojo and Abbe Sensei was changing too, that he was standing there talking to students, while bare-chested, though in his 40's, was very fit.

All the young guys around him were also very fit, with large shoulders with the usual narrow waist, but not with Abbe Sensei, did not seem to be a vertical line from hips to shoulders, his body was almost in tabular form as a refrigerator and there was the appearance of a man very powerful.

Later he became the personal assistant to Williams Sensei and I would be his wish to visit the house of Stuart Road Otani
Acton, London where Abbe Sensei had their own rooms. My visits would be imposed for various reasons, and sometimes lead to Sensei at the airport or a seminar. Derek Eastman and I became regular visitors as they had become good friends with Tomio Otani Sensei. It was in one of these visits that I had to Sensei door and he called me to enter, when I entered I was surprised to see several wild birds in the room had pigeons – Sparrows – a blackbird and a Robin, more birds were out on the sill of the window, birds seemed totally at ease and have not even worried about my entry, usually with wild birds as little noise or movement and that have been, I've always liked wild birds and the luck to see this repeatedly.

On another occasion, when I went to see Abbe Sensei, when I entered his room, I was watching the Series Cricket World, I have always been an athlete and sports mad, I really do not like Cricket, I'd rather see grass grow. I was not best pleased to see the man I admired Cricket seeing both, I politely asked "Sensei, do you like cricket?" He replied: "NO! stupid game, I see every day to try to understand stupid game, never understand, call the World Series not, the world, the only countries that have been colonized by the British Empire "… … .. Very deep … … … …

Sensie Kenshiro Abbe was 8th Dan Judo – sixth dan in Kendo – 6th Dan Aikido – 6th Dan Kyudo – 6th Dan Karate.
To see Abbe Sensei to demonstrate any of the above art was always a great experience. There will never forget one incident that took place in the Championship at the Acton Town BJC Hall, London in the early 1960s, Abbe Sensei and Tomio Otani's National Coach BKC came on stage to demonstrate sword technique, Derek Eastman and I were seated in the front row as the swordsmen face off after a couple of techniques Abbe Sensei made a cut on his head Tomio intermittent, I swear I never Tomio like I blinked and the public the idea that Sensei had made a fatal mistake as the road seemed contact Tomio forehead, never flinched as one Tomio large piece of thick black bangs fell. Back in the locker room asked him if he had been afraid, he replied, "Why I am afraid I am with my teacher "… … … .. This is probably one of the most incredible things I have seen in the Martial Arts.
Kenshiro Abbe Sensei as I said earlier was a powerful and feared man in the presence and appearance on and off the tatami (mat). I assure you it was much more impressive than the receiving end of his technique, I always knew that any technique that is totally under control Abbe Sensei however, seemed to make no effort. Abbe Sensei was Judo become legendary, his Aikido was very tight and direct, they do Aikido judoka like to use body contact technique, Abbe Sensei never did any of the wide movements, ending we see in modern Aikido. I have never experienced that feeling of total power with any other teacher.

Tadashi Abe Sensei. 1926 – 1984 ..
Tadashi Abe Sensei was a small man and completely positive. We have heard from time to time that a Japanese teacher should have been born in the era Samurai, If I met a man who was Abe Sensei. During World War II Global training to fly a man suicide torpedo, before he was called to die for his country that ended the war, was something he would regret for all his life, he felt had been cheated of its destiny. It was a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba from the 1940s and a great exponent of traditional Aikido. After several years in France, he returned to Japan. And in 1967 he visited the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, he was very upset by the now observed aikido taught there. He watched the class for a while before getting up and draw attention to himself when he had all the attention, he spoke out loud "I apologize to all the ladies present, this is not Aikido this is for women "who puts his Diploma Hombu Aikido on the mat and left. Abe Sensei said that to fight a man with fists only is a real challenge at all, but a fight with bare hands against a man with a knife was a real challenge, I often wore a knife and when he challenged his opponent to offer this by saying "please this is for you."

Sensie Matsutaro Otani. 1901 – 1977 (?)
I have not Otani Sensei studied although I complied and talk to him many times when visiting his son Abbe Sensei and Tomio. Sensei was a very small man about 5 feet 2ins had I left Japan at the age of 20 years. I was told that someone insulted his father and had challenged the man with a sword, his father did not like this and had Sensei to leave home for a while. He boarded a ship that "anywhere" and worked his way around the world until he came to Britain. He had studied martial arts and met with the famous teacher of Yukio Tani from that point to lead a life of Budo. He was a seventh dan in Judo and have no one as fighters, once on the ground it was impossible to hold, your opponent might think you had a warehouse and the next thing Sensei "sneak" under him and choke out. Whereas that most Japanese seem to have a look forbidding austere approach them not, so with Otani Sensei, who always seemed happy with a smile and peace with himself and his surroundings. He was affectionately known by most as "Smiler" my education did not dare call it that. I asked Abbe Sensei demonstrating Aikido at the BJC National Championships on the BBC Lime Grove in London. I was backstage waiting to be called on stage with Derek Eastman a few feet away from me was Otani Sensei and the Japanese Ambassadto then the UK, both in conversation, while talking walked past a Judoka Otani Sensei and called "Hello Smiler" and went into the locker room, I must be honest and admit he was furious at this blatant show of disrespect against the Ambassador. I followed the judoka who I knew in the locker room, I told him what he thought of his lack of respect, which in turn has been very explicit in his thoughts about me.

I gave him a little slap which unfortunately ended its participation in the event. I in turn took me several minutes just anger at the stage where Derek and I gave a demonstration Aikido hard. Lady Baden Powell, who was sitting in the front row was heard to say to Abbe Sensei that our demonstration was the most terrible manifestation of violence I had witnessed before.
Moreover, the Japanese ambassador approached me and told me it was the best display of Aikido I had ever seen.
~~~~~~~~
Tomio Otani Sensei: 1939 – 1991 National Coach for Kendo British Council: it was quite a character and a good company to be with. Always I remember as we travel with Tomio on the London Underground between Acton and Abbe Sensei dojo in Sandwich Street, Kings Cross, as the train rattled and rolled through the tunnels all competing to see who was able to maintain its balance of the longest before grabbing the belts. Tomio always won …. Derek and I studied with Kendo Tomio and he in turn, the study of Aikido, to my knowledge has never had a classification Tomio Aikido. I am surprised when I see people who claim to have been classified Aikido by Tomio Otani?? . Derek Eastman and I like going to classes in Acton Kendo Tomio, Tomio was so fast that when we had competition, which struck him several times with the shinai while you were thinking of hitting. One night, Derek was having some serious practice with Tomio, was very determined to beat
it only once, Derek wore full body armor Kendo, Tomio Derek knocked on the head with a shinai (bamboo sword) for Shomen (center of the head) Derek just collapsed and was out of the account. Derek said that when she had recovered she felt as if he was not wearing his Men (head guard), also said he felt as if he had been beaten, I agreed with Derek that we both realized that you can never put someone with a Shinai, it is true, Derek felt and saw it happen.
Mikoto Nakazono Sensei Masahilo :1918-1994 0.8 º Dan Aikido. Judo 6th dan. Kendo 6th dan.
Nakazono Sensei was sent Osensei Europe by Morihei Ueshiba in 1962 was that of Europe and North Africa representative of Aikikai. Sensei came to the UK at the invitation of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei. Nakazono Sensei was a teacher very hard and very demanding, which would become a favorite of all the Japanese teachers of all grades Dan Hut, which is still remembered with respect and affection today. Nakazono Sensei made his first visit to the United Kingdom and the Hut Dojo in 1963. We advised all that Abbe Sensei Nakazono Sensei had asked to reclassify all eight grades Dan barracks to meet modern standards, Headquarters Hombu.
After a second dan grading was demoted to first dan, Sensei said, "needed to sell your gi while prices are high" we could not understand the reason for this as it was one of the best grades given to the shelter, became very disillusioned and left after a few months, perhaps the reason was that he was too young?. Sensei said that we could all go to the Aikikai and practice on an equal footing with the best there is.
As best we met Sensei sensei asked him if I were to Aske, who gave me a letter to visit the Hombu Dojo? He looked at me and asked "why", I thought my request did not need an explanation, so I tried to say that I would like to study there. Nakazono Sensei said "There is no good teachers left at the Hombu Dojo, are all the teachings in the West."
Nakazono Sensei attended the Summer School Grange Farm 1963. I have trained hard in the Hut Dojo, which was nothing compared to what we go through Sensie Nakazono. In some ways the problems of our age, we taught and trained hard, Abbe Sensei had said that “ we are not going to sensei as to show disrespect. Sensei do not see it at all, his impression was that we were "all" evidence of it. Abate Sensie allowed this to continue for a full week before explaining that Nakazono Sensei. I am sure that from then on had a lot of respect for us. One day I was invited to blow sensei, I had left my blow intelligently as I do not want to hurt him, he was very angry, I think now there had enough, he said he hit 100%, I did, I ended up with my head in the chimney of a large fireplace in old English with my gi sooty course the other grades Dan found this very amusing.
~~~~~~~~
Masahilo Nakazono Sensei.
There are many stories of Nakazono Sensei many of whom have said article. The only thing we learned very quicly was that he was a most powerful and talented teacher of Aikido. In the Hut Dojo were many tough guys they were bouncers or market traders. The Grange Farm Summer School there was one guy in particular was not so sure about the real power of Sensie, his name was Morris. At the bar that night was again Big Tony, who was the strongest man and greatest in the field and said: "Tony, I think you all are filing out of respect rather than the power of art, I do not think Tony can take you if you do not want to lose? "Tony Morris laughed and said:" Look Morris! I know what I feel and I'm not so stupid to try to resist Nakazono Sensei, NOW! If you would try? then feel free to try "..
Teaching the next morning and he was sought Nakazono a big guy, for whatever reason and picked ignord great Tony Morris, everyone was aware of the feelings of Nakazono Sensei Morris and took him in Sankyo, faithful to their own stupidity Morris fully resisted and cry in the middle of Morris was the sound of every bone in his right hand, breaking, there is sympathy for Morris as he was taken to hospital. It was also the end of the course for Morris. I've always said the best teachers of Aikido comes from a Judo background and made Kenshiro Abbe was a sensei Nakazono 6th Dan Kodokan Judo.

Masamichi Noro Sensei
Noro Sensei visited the UK in 1964 as a 5th dan. He was young and very nice to very dynamic flowing Aikido, I had never seen this kind of Aikido with large circular motion. This was very different from what we saw with the older teachers. Noro Sensei was to make several visits to the UK and in turn to visit his dojo in Paris, where Derek Eastman was going to get a second dan in Noro Sensei in 1964 in one of those visits. Noro Sensei was not as inaccessible as many of the teachers older and had a good sense of humor. Now there were two Noro, Nakazono visiting the Hut at different times, Nakazono Sensei teaches his technique and Noro would teach his style, as each visited both had the same question "Why do it this way!" I did not teach this, "we did not have the courage to say we were doing the style of other teachers. I was on stage in 1963 at the Royal Albert Hall with both Noro Sensei and Nakazono, Sensei Nakazono Noro used in a knife attack, as he pinned Noro and took the knife from him and raised the knife over his body as if off to finish his opponent, for some reason this made Noro very angry and said he was wrong to do this to another high grade, Nakazono should say that was much larger than Noro Sensei. Noro Sensei I liked a lot, but found difficult to change to that flowing movement, I did prefer the style of Abbe Sensei and Nakazono Sensei. While the style Noro was a pretty sight, I found the Abbe and Nakazono technique to be effective on the mat and you knew it would also be effective in the street, his was something I never really sure with the style that flows from Noro Sensei.

Harada Sensei Mutsusuke
Harada Sensei met when he arrived at the Hut Dojo Sensie with Kenshiro Abbe in 1963.
It was agreed that immediately could start Karate classes at the Hut Dojo. Initially the classes were so small and Derek Eastman I join in training. Harada also liked the Aikido dojo you saw in the Hut, and add some movements of Aikido to Karate. Harada Sensei had been graduated 5 dan in 1957 by Grand Master Sensei Funakoshi Ginshin. 50 years later, still 5th dan, which indicates that any grade above 5th dan is' completely useless. " At a time when the degrees in the martial arts are being marginalized was a declaration of restoration to both Henry Ellis and Derek Eastman was according to this line of thought and made the highest grade in THIS 5th dan. Harada Sensei I have met continuously since 1963 and met with him recently TK Chiba in 40 is held in October 2006, where both were guests at the dinner Chiba Sensei event.
~~~~~~~~
H Kobayashi Sensei: Osaka Hombu.
I have a copy of a letter sent to Kenshiro Abbe Sensei Ueshiba Kisshomaru in 1966 by telling you of the outcome of the visit of the official representative Hombu for the United Kingdom and Europe, Mr. Kobayashi H Hombu Osaka. The Aikikai were surprised by the rapid growth of Aikido in the West. During his tour he had visited Sensei Koybayashi Hut Dojo with Abbe Sensei.
We had never met the man before stepping on the mat as he never smiled or gave the slightest indication that he was delighted to be there. It seemed to sit there stone in front of what then seemed that all life, as she sat with legs and the elderly who now belonged to another party, Koybayashi spoke, it was difficult to understand and to be honest I really do not think they were much wiser for the visit. It seemed to be a very hard man. Now he was standing with indication for one of the Hut dan grades to attack him with a bokken, the hut never attack one half, and with the appearance of this Sensei's better to be positive. I'm sure he did not expect an attack so strong and was beaten on the head, while most men had knocked down, but not with Kobayashi Sensei, seemed angry and I can assure the reader that from that moment he had never committed another error. Never saw him again … … … … … …
Haku Michigami Sensei 9th dan judoka born in 1912
Michigami Sensei visited Grange Farm Summer School in approximately 1963 and participated in the National Championship in the BJC Royal Albert Hall in London. He was a friend of Abbe Sensei and had also trained at the School Busen. He spent most of his teaching career at Bordeaux, France. It formed the most largest ever judoka Anton Geesink west who came to win the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Japan. I met this legendary Judoka but not study with him. It seemed to be a good friend of Abbe Sensei as they spoke, I'm sure they spoke of the days 'old' as we all do.
The photo on the cover of the magazine is for all Japanese teachers who participated in the BJC National Championships 1963 at the Royal Albert Hall. London. From left to right: M Noro – H Michigami – Abbe K – M Harada – M Nakazono.
Sitting M Otani Sensei. I uke both M and M Nakazono Sensei Noro Sensei in one of the best days ARST martial of my career. I have written all these teachers in this article. This is a rare photo of Japanese teachers see so many together at once.
~~~~~~~~

Shohei Hamano Sensei 9th dan Kodokan Judo
Hamano Sensie I saw when I visited Grange Farm Summer School. Abbe Sensei had graduated to 3rd Dan
So many years. Abbe Sensei was higher than in age and the extent and influence, however, we were surprised how they all try to Abbe Sensei seemed as if the highest level. I have little to write about this great judoka see but it was a pleasure to see and Abbe Sensei together. We had all been informed that this great master of this Day in particular.

Nobody knew ninth given earlier. I'm not sure what we were expecting, which created great excitement throughout the camp. There was a strange incident during class that morning to Nakazono Sensei. As Nakazono Sensei was teaching someone kept poking his head out the door and in an emotional call the class whisper "He just came and few minutes later the door opened and we would get another update high softly. Nakazono Sensei was getting a little agitated by this and had his back to the door when openend and innuendo, shouted that they were only enter the building. Nakazono Sensei do not look around at the last update. He was still standing with his back to the door when he entered Kenshiro Abbe Sensei and Sensei Shohei Hamano. Sensei Nakazono not look immediately around it, all those who were tempted to say he had just come in, we decided to stay silent. Now it seemed so long since Abbe Sensei came, however, I'm sure it was second only when Nakazono Sensei clapped and turned on his knees, then bowed. It seemed to lean only to Abbe Sensei, maybe we were all wrong.

TK Chiba Shihan.
He documented the history of the arrival in 1966 from Chiba Sensei to the UK in several articles a day. I for the benefit of this article to add the highlights. Kenshiro Abbe Sensei returned to Japan for the 1964 Olympics where his good friend Sensei Michigami win the heavyweight gold with his star student Anton Geesink. Abbe Sensei had the opportunity to visit Osensei Morihei Ueshiba, where he discussed the possibility Osensei to send a permanent representative to the United Kingdom Aikikai, who agreed. Unfortunately this never been discussed Sensei Ken Williams and Dan grades at the Hut Dojo. Sensei Williams was the first student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei for Aikido and the first in the UK. He had worked hard since Aikido then to build absolutely nothing to what had become ten years later. Now William Abbe Sensei Sensei advises a young teacher directed from the Hombu to take control of Aikido in the UK. This situation was a shock for grades K Williams and Dan Hut. Now, one thing was to have visited various Japanese teachers but to have a permanent base in the UK was something else.

One can only imagine the situation in the Hut Dojo such as Abbe Sensei arrived with Chiba Sensei, who was then a 5th dan. So I was not watching and holding a visiting teacher, you were looking at one that was here to stay, not stay alone, but take BAC control of all UK Aikido. This situation was not making Sensie Chiba, I'm sure he had no idea what to expect. It received a warm welcome, just a mixed reaction from all concerned. To be honest Sensei Williams tried to get the most out of this situation. Unfortunately, Chiba Sensei and did not get along. It was obvious it would never work. Kenshiro Abbe gave control BAC Chiba Sensei. It was also a time of uncertain loyalties in British Aikido instructors as across the United Kingdom decided which path to take ukemi, some were loyal to Ken Williams and some wanted a regular Japanese teacher. He later left the Hut Dojo Chiba joined Sensie

I was his assistant and made a BBC broadcast radio world together for 30 minutes. He later made a television show in Granada. It was a new adventure for me. That had left the Hut Dojo as I was not happy with recent events I did not agree, the main issue was Dan granting honorary degrees, these were issued as there were only eight degrees Akido Dan throughout the UK and everyone was at the Hut Dojo. It was decided (not by me) Williams probably between K and Abbe Sensei Dan needed a degree in the central areas of the United Kingdom, I agree with that. Aikido had progressed due to the high quality Hut Dan grade, I tried to explain to Sensei Williams that if there were people who were not given grade level would be a mockery Hut Aikido.
~~~~~~~~
Nobuyoshi Tamura Shihan:
Tamura Sensei met when he visited the Hut Dojo in the mid 60s. It was quite an incredible aikidoist a very pleasant character. I've never seen the difficult side of what I had seen in so many other teachers. His aikido is very strong, but his movement was more impressive. 9
When he did suwariwaza (Kneeling technique) could move faster on his knees than I could on my feet. A day after I asked suwariwaza Tamura Sensei "Sensei I can lift the bottom of the hakama up? "He gave me a very ironic look and asked," Why! "I replied," I've never seen anyone move like Sensie knees, I'm sure they have wheels under the hakama "laughed and quiet joy that showed that there were no wheels.
Left: Ichimura Sensei and Tamura Sensei 1968. I took the two on a tour of London on a wet day with them have only one pair of zori.
I trained with Tamura Sensei several times, but it was better to come when he and Ichimura Sensei attended summer school in Bracknell in 1968. This event was organized by TK Chiba Shihan. This was a fantastic week with the following Chiba Sensei – Tamura – Ichimura – Tada. I had many teachers in my house and it was summer time and the weather was hot. My wife had prepared a meal for all of them and instead of sitting at the table they all went out and sat on the front lawn, talking and eating, my neighbors were fascinated to see all these Japanese gentlemen sitting in a circle in front of my house.
~~~~~~~

1
H Tada Sensei:
Tada Sensei was a high-ranking teacher before joining the Osensei Karate Hombu Dojo. Personally, I saw and felt the added strength in his technique. As the high Akidoist UK Summer School in Bracknell is often uke him in the next picture I am sure you are cleaning the mat with me. Tada Sensei was slightly higher than the other teachers and more serious, while the others were young and even made the usually serious Chiba
Sensei seem almost jovial. Tada Sensei was the representative of Hombu Italy. After week Bracknell never knew it again.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Tochikazu Ichimura Sensei: born in 1941: See also pictured above with Tamura Sensei.
Ichimura Sensei met in summer school Bracknell, we were very close in age, which was a second dan at the time.
Ichimura was a 4th dan. I'm not sure the reasons for Chiba Sensei, but he would work with Isshamura Sensei, I think he wanted to see his pupil and assistant against a Japanese teacher youth. I thought I was going to punished for this 4th Dan Young. I think that really held my own and I did not feel all stages of this young Japanese. I think he knew what was happening, we had a good feeling about this for the rest of the course.
~~~~~~~

Sensei Ken Williams: The first British student Aikido.
Sensei Williams was the first student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei Aikido in 1955. He later became the National Coach of Aikido and the BAC. Dan was a third in Judo and was well known in the circuit of Judo, it would be important for the future promotion of Aikido. I often see people attempt to split Aikido and Judo. Note that Williams Sensei himself was a Judoka, and many of the early converts were Dan grades in Judo. I can not imagine anyone else other than Williams Sensei once that could have taken up the challenge and kept the accumulation of a steam train that was Aikido throughout the country. Your progress from nothing was quite dramatic and we must always greatly Aikido K Williams Sensei. Unfortunately we live in an age where our proud history and lineage of Aikido is not appreciated. So perhaps documenting these events may have a future generation that.

Sensei Williams was as I said before a very natural talent for Aikido and I would say was the inspiration that made the barrack Dojo fame internationally.

The major categories of 3rd kyu I became assistant Sensei Williams was hard but I progressed very quickly. There is no doubt that these Aikido early in the Hut Dojo were very special, and still are.
There are only four of the original levels of education are still – Williams K – Foster H – H Ellis – D Eastman. Unfortunately time has taken its toll on many of the other teachers.

William 'Project Bill "Woods Sensei
This article documented and my memories would not be complete without the addition of a well-deserved credit to Bill Woods Sensei. Bill was a small short man, but a giant of British Martial Arts. I believe, and have stated on other items that Bill Woods probably had more influence on the development of Martial Arts in the UK than any other English.
When Bill met Abbe Sensei was already given with the third and LJS Judo Champion. Would the LJS and joined with Abbe Sensei. He became the secretary of the BJC – BKC – BAC – BKC. This organization came at a time when some 35,000 members around the world under its guidance. Was first graduate student Kenshiro Abbe Sensei Kendo certified number one and number two Tomio Otani. This 2003 photo shows Bill with Derek Eastman pivot on your left and Henry Ellis to the right. I saw again in the bill Kenshiro Abbe Memorial Celebration May 2005, where he made a supreme effort despite his serious illness to be there to present his respects to his teacher. Unfortunately, this was the last time I see my old friend who died a few months later. It will never be forgotten.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Jiro Nakazono Sensei
It was a great personal pleasure and honor for me to teach with Jiro Nakazono Sensei, son of one of my most respected teachers of the great Nakazono Masahilo 45 years earlier. The two were in the Memorial event held in Neath Wales "Masahilo Nakazono Aikido Memorial Event." I spent some quality time with Jiro Nakazono where he spoke of his father and his influence on Aikido in Europe and in particular the United Kingdom
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dang Phong Sensei
I was also privileged to teach with Sensei Phong "Masahilo Nakazono Aikido Memorial Event." Sensii Phong had traveled from California, USA to attend this event to the memory of his teacher. Phong Sensei I found most notable being a man. His personal story with his impeccable lineage that makes a wish could spend time with him just listening to the stories he has to tell. His aikido is very traditional and powerful.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Henry Ellis Sensei:
Henry Ellis started Judo in 1956. In 1957, after seeing Kenshiro Abbe Sensei demonstrating Aikido Williams joined the small Aikido class, he continued his Judo classes for a year before deciding to concentrate fully on Aikido. He became the first assistant to Sensei K Williams and was also a direct student of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei. After leaving the cabin and join with TK Chiba Shihan was to become assistant Chiba Sensei 1967-1970.
Schools Ellis Traditional Aikido (ESTA) was officially formed in 1962 by Sensei Derek Eastman, who asked if I could name of the organization in my name, I actually agreed and joined my own organization. making it one of the first organizations of Aikido in the UK. The IS were members of the MAC and the founding members of the British Aikido Board (BAB). Together with other member associations are expected to create a setting organization for members UK Aikido community. In 2000, the Assembly decided that the BAB was not fit for purpose and resigned from the ESTA.
The ESTA is an organization small, not by circumstances, but by design. The IS has a small group dojo in the United Kingdom with dojo in the U.S.. The dojo is located in Dallas, Texas and Alamogordo New Mexico.
Henry Ellis remembers being invited to a seminar which he accepted. He was invited to sit on the grading panel, refused. As I watched saw more people are calling Dan grade on a day he and Derek Eastman Sensei was classified in the past 50 years.
Henry Ellis and Derek Eastman has graduated only 14 people who give grades. They are very proud of the loyalty of their qualifications they have never had a movie Leave grade or excision of the IS since
formed in 1962. THIS is the intention to continue to teach and preserve the true traditional Aikido as taught by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei from its origins in the UK.
GURPS Martial Arts
GURPS Martial Arts
$27.48
Inscrutable masters from hidden temples. Special Forces soldiers. Swashbuckling pirates. Bare-chested brawlers. GURPS Martial Arts brings fighting styles from throughout history to Fourth Edition. From popular Asian bare-handed techniques to European combat arts to fantastic non-human training, this book balances realistic historical schools with cinematic feats from Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Hollywood. Recreate the greatest fighters in the world, or create a style to fit a new campaign, Martial Arts has the techniques and guidelines you need. Not all combat options map to techniques and styles, however. Many require extensions to the combat system itself, so Martial Arts expands on the combat and injury rules from GURPS Basic Set. Some of these additions are highly realistic, while others are extremely cinematic – but they’re all optional, allowing the GM to decide which rules apply. Customizing the GURPS combat system has never been easier. This book replaces and expands on the information and rules from the previous edition of GURPS Martial Arts for Third Edition.
Strength and Power Training for Martial Arts
Strength and Power Training for Martial Arts
$10.48
Strength and power are essential attributes for any martial artist, affecting everything from how hard you punch to how high you jump. Whether your goal is to defeat an opponent in the ring or on the street, the stronger you are, the better the odds of walking away as the victor. Strength and Power Training For Martial Arts is a total approach to building your strength base. Learn how to use free weights, machines, body weight exercises and plyometrics to build your muscles while increasing speed and flexibility. Each muscle group is discussed in detail – how it’s used in martial arts, how to develop it, which exercises are most effective, and most importantly, how to take advantage of anatomical strengths when striking, blocking, kicking and grappling. Beyond muscular strength, this book looks at the concepts of cardiovascular strength endurance, the impact of flexibility on strength, mental approaches to training, and the anatomy, physics and biomechanics of power. Strength and Power Training For Martial Arts wraps up with training plans for karate, taekwondo, hapkido, judo, jujitsu, aikido, muay thai/kickboxing and mixed martial arts as well as advice on designing your own personalized strength training plan.
Martial Mechanics
Martial Mechanics
$14.98
Interest in a wide range of martial arts grows exponentially each year, but few practitioners understand the scientific forces that underlie these arts. The originators of ancient traditional systems intuitively grasped the body mechanics behind their disciplines, and thus were capable of generating uncanny striking force. Contemporary students, on the other hand, often fail to achieve the high levels of technical proficiency they desire because they are unaware of these laws and how they work in a martial arts context.Drawing on the author’s decades of experience as both student and teacher, Martial Mechanics explains, in humorous, easy-to-understand language, how physics and kinesiology affect martial arts techniques and how readers can best utilize them to make them faster, more powerful, and hence more effective in actual combat. Featuring black-and-white photographs throughout, Martial Mechanics is written for both internal and external martial artists, mixed martial arts practitioners with an interest in competition or self-defense, students of kung fu, karate, taekwondo, muay thai boxing, kickboxing, wing chun, and more. Even many of the traditional grappling arts utilize certain striking techniques, and their disciples as well can improve their percussive skills with this practical guide.
Dr. Webster-Doyle's Martial Arts Guide For Parents
Dr. Webster-Doyle’s Martial Arts Guide For Parents
$12.98
As a response to young people being victimized by bullies, more and more parents are choosing to enroll their children in martial arts schools. But are these schools teaching what their students really need? Dr. Terrence Webster-Doyle demonstrates convincingly how conventional instruction in martial artsâ??focused on physical skills onlyâ??is not enough to help young people understand and resolve conflict. However, if they are introduced to a whole martial art, one that teaches how to avoid and therefore prevent conflict, young people can learn to deal with threatening situations powerfully and effectively, without resorting to physical violence. Included in the text are mental martial arts skills, a chart of nonviolent alternatives, active family role-plays, and other creative activities that parents and children can work through together. Both parents and their children will discover ways to deal peacefully with violence that are surprisingly simple, satisfying to practice, and immediately useful.
