Introduction to the Martial Arts, Part 1

Martial arts term can be defined as a fighting art that combines the encoding control techniques with the philosophy, strategy and cultural traditions. A martial art can be offensive to an art of combat or an art of self-defense defense. You can also practice to promote health and fitness as a means of personal and spiritual development, and as a form of sport or entertainment. Martial arts can be performed with or without weapons.

Martial arts styles

There are many different styles of martial art practiced around the world. In general, however, can be categorized into three types: traditional martial arts, martial arts based on the sport and martial arts weapons-based.

Traditional martial arts like jujutsu, which was used by samurai warriors in Japan, or La Scuola Italiana della Spada (Italian school of fencing)-evolved from training programs battlefield. Engaged in combat situations, these arts have the sole purpose of providing a professional and technical skills necessary to kill or incapacitate the enemy. sport martial arts base, however, incorporate training regimens that prepare professional sporting competitions and only in life-threatening situations. Muay Thai, western boxing, judo, mixed martial arts and tae kwon do are prime examples. Weapons arts-based focus specifically on the use of arms. The techniques learned here can then be applied in any of the traditional arts field of battle or in competitions sports. Kendo, and escrima bataireacht are all examples of art based on weapons. Depending on the style of martial art, school, and teachers, will be varying amounts of emphasis on each of these aspects, with some martial arts that combines elements of all three.

Ancient art, modern myths

Fight against humanity and the need to dominate and defend is as old as life itself. Our ancestors survival instincts undoubtedly sowed the seeds for the development of martial arts. First, the methods of cultivation of effective techniques battlefield, and the first encryption to provide high quality education and consistent across troops, many of the martial arts practiced today have a surprisingly long history, which is believed to comprise some 5,000 years. Furthermore, contrary to the belief popular, is not only defined by the traditions of the East. While extensive archaeological evidence points to the ancient practice of martial arts in China and India, many other nations and cultures can make similar claims. In Egypt, for example, tombs dating from about 2000 BC show that the stick fighting arts were highly evolved, and the ancient art of wrestling full contact and is believed to have been considered an ancient sport at the time of his first appearance at the Olympics old in 648 BC.

A global phenomenon

In more recent times, the Olympic movement has advocated more eastern and western martial arts. Greco-Roman wrestling and fencing, for example, appears in the first modern Games in 1896, while the western archery, boxing, judo and tae kwon do made its inaugural appearance in 1900, 1904, 1964 and 2000, respectively. The Asian Games may add karate and wushu to the list of martial arts practiced at the highest level.

In The Demon’s Sermon on the Martial Arts, a translation of the 18th-century samurai classic by Issai Chozanshi, an anonymous swordsman journeys to the heart of Mt. Kurama, the traditional domain of these formidable beings. There he encounters a host of demon; through a series of discussions and often playful discourse, they reveal to him the very deepest principles of the martial arts, and show how the secrets of sword fighting impart the truths of life itself. The Demon’s Sermon opens with The discourses, a collection of whimsical fables concerned with the theme of transformation-for Chozanshi a core phenomenon to the martial artist. Though ostensibly light and fanciful, these stories offer the attentive reader ideas that subvert perceived notions of conflict and the individual’s relationship to the outside world. In the main body of work, The Sermon, Chozanshi demonstrates how transformation is fostered and nurtured through ch’i – the vital and fundamental energy that flows through all things, animate and inanimate, and the very bedrock of Chozanshi’s themes and the martial arts themselves. This he does using the voice of the Tengu, and the reader is invited to eavesdrop with the swordsman on the demon’s revelations of the deepest truths concerning ch’i, the principles of yin and yang, and how these forces shape our existence. In The Dispatch, the themes are brought to an elegant conclusion using the parable of an old and toothless cat who, like the demon, has mastered the art of acting by relying on nothing, and in so doing can defeat even the wiliest and most vicious of rats despite his advanced years. This is the first direct translation from the original text into English by William Scott Wilson, the renowned translator of Hagakure and The Book of Five Rings. It captures the tone and essence of this classic while still making it accessible and meaningful to today’s reader. Chozanshi’s deep understanding of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto, as well as his insight into the central role of ch’i in the universe, are all given thoughtful treatment in Wilson’s introduction and extensive endnotes.
