Martial Arts Samurai Pack [2 Discs] - $8.99 Includes:Kung Fu: The Punch of Death (1972), MPAA Rating: R The Street Fighter (1974) Bruce Lee: The Man, The Myth (1976), MPAA Rating: PG Legend of the Eight Samurai (1984) Kung Fu: The Punch of Death In this period martial arts action drama, Fong Si Yu (Meng Fei) is a gifted but arrogant young man who has not learned how to manage his anger or use his gifts for the martial arts for positive purposes. Fong’s reckless attacks upon the corrupt leader of a martial arts academy leads to the death of his father, and the disappearance of his mother; a further assault, which claims the life of a student, leaves Fong severely injured at the hands of Iron Fist Tan (Yasuaki Kurata) and the other members of the academy. A humiliated Fong is reunited with his mother, who helps to train him for an epic rematch against Tan and the embittered students. Kung Fu Punch of Death was one of several martial arts dramas which followed the story of Fong Si Yu, most of which were produced by the Grand Old Men of the Kung Fu genre, the Shaw Brothers. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi The Street Fighter While most martial arts films focus mainly on showing the moves, strikes and blows of the combatants, they don’t show the logical consequences of these battles in any detail. The Streetfighter does, and it won an “X” rating for violence when it was released to the U.S. in 1975. This cult film and its three sequels are thought to be particular favorites of American director Quentin Tarantino. Sonny Chiba stars as Terry, a mercenary hired by the Yakuza and Mafia to kidnap a wealthy heiress. The mobs refuse to pay his large fee for the job, and he immediately changes sides. Much of the violent and gory action takes place aboard an oil tanker; though injured, Terry still takes out at least half of his many opponents. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi Bruce Lee: The Man, The Myth This biography of famed martial arts actor Bruce Lee begins as Lee is leaving Hong Kong for America, to fulfill his mother’s wishes. The story follows him to San Francisco, where he first settled, and to the University of Washington in Seattle, where he established his first martial-arts classes. Scenes from such Bruce Lee films as The Big Boss are re-created. ~ Brian Gusse, Rovi Legend of the Eight Samurai As might be gathered from its title, The Legend of the Eight Samurai is set in feudal Japan. Princess Hiroku Yokoshimaru’s family is wiped out, along with her bodyguards. All that stands between the princess and certain death is an inexperienced young samurai played by martial-arts expert Sonny Chiba. Armed with little more than determination, Chiba must battle an octet of phantom warriors, a witch, and a killer centipede! The Legend of the Eight Samurai is as good as anything else of its type, sometimes a little better. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Martial Arts Collection: 4 Film Favorites [2 Discs] – Widescreen Fullscreen $14.99 Includes:Bloodsport (1986), MPAA Rating: R Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991), MPAA Rating: R Rumble in the Bronx (1995), MPAA Rating: R The Corruptor (1999), MPAA Rating: R Bloodsport Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in the aptly titled Bloodsport. An American soldier at large in Hong Kong, Van Damme becomes involved in the Kumite (also spelled Kumatai), a highly illegal kickboxing competition. Whoever survives the bout will be crowned Kumite champion of the world-a title that has plenty of challengers with homicide in their hearts. The finale offers a duel to the death (or near-death) between Van Damme and reigning Kumite king Bolo Yeung. The script is based on the real-life exploits of martial arts champ Frank Dux (who serves as the film’s fight coordinator). Denied such niceties as production values, Bloodsport scores big-time in the violent action department. A sequel followed in 1995, inventively titled Bloodsport 2. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Showdown in Little Tokyo Director Mark L. Lester modeled this police action drama on the Hong Kong style, guaranteeing plenty of over-the-top action sequences. Dolph Lundgren stars as police detective Chris Kenner, an American raised in Japan. He is given a new partner, Johnny Murata (Brandon Lee, making his Hollywood debut), a Japanese raised in America. The two are made for each other — Chris doesn’t appreciate American culture, while Johnny doesn’t much like Japanese culture. One thing they both enjoy are the martial arts, of which they are experts. The two are assigned to L.A.’s Little Tokyo, trying to nab the notorious Yoshida (Carey-Hiroyuki Tagawa), a drug manufacturer using a local brewery as his distribution center. Yoshida, a member of the Yakuza, has brought the residents of Little Tokyo to their knees. But Chris has personal reasons for wanting to get Yoshida — as a child he witnessed Yoshida murdering his parents. When Yoshida rapes and kidnaps Minako (Tia Carrere), a beautiful lounge singer, it’s the last straw and Chris and Johnny set out for Yoshida’s heavily guarded home for a big showdown. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi Rumble in the Bronx After years as a major star in most of the rest of the world, Jackie Chan finally broke through to stardom in the United States with Rumble in the Bronx, a dubbed and re-edited version of Hung Fan Kui. Here Chan plays Keung, a police officer from Hong Kong who travels to New York to attend the wedding of his uncle, Bill (Bill Tung). Bill has just sold his grocery store to Elaine (Anita Mui), and Keung finds Elaine to be a pretty good reason to extend his visit to New York. However, a mean-spirited and fashion-challenged street gang has moved into the neighborhood and is demanding protection money from the local storekeepers. Elaine is ready to sell the store and move on, but Keung is determined to show the toughs that he’s not about to be pushed around. Things get even more sticky when the hoods are on the trail of a lost cache of stolen jewels. ~ Mar |

Gordon Liu Presents: Martial Collection (5 Disc) - $14.99 Includes:Shaolin Invincible Sticks (1978) Mantis in the Monkey’s Shadow (1979) Rivals of the Silver Fox (1980) Death Duel of Mantis (1984) Snake in the Crane’s Shadow Shaolin Invincible Sticks Lee Tso Nam directs the martial arts action film Shaolin Invincible Sticks. Wong Tao appears in the film as the soon-to-be-leader of the Invincible Sticks Clan. The Air Splitting Pole Fighter (Chang Yi), opposes his quest for control of the group. Their epic clashes comprise the majority of this film. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi Mantis in the Monkey’s Shadow When an irreplaceable government list is stolen by Devil Hand villain Chang Yi, it’s up to notorious Phantom Kung Fu master Wong Tao to get the list back by any means necessary in an action-packed martial arts adventure that will leave viewers breathless. Though Tao is indeed a force to be reckoned with, he can’t get the list back alone and he’s got a deadly pair of twin masters who specialize in the Seven Star Mantis and Monkey Style King Fu techniques to help him get the job done right. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Rivals of the Silver Fox Philip Kao directs himself in the martial arts action film Rivals of the Silver Fox. Kao plays the Silver Fox who, in addition to being a master of Iron Body and Flesh Piercing Kung Fu, has total control of his bodily organs. The fox infiltrates a Shaolin Temple that houses 18 bronzemen. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi Death Duel of Mantis Two martial-arts experts meet in a final showdown that will determine who holds the power of the Mantis. ~ John Bush, Rovi Snake in the Crane’s Shadow No synopsis available. |

Martial Arts Essentials, Vol. 4: The Films of Yuen Wo Ping Series 2 - $14.99 Includes:Bloody Fists (1972) From China With Death (1974), MPAA Rating: R Dynamo (1978), MPAA Rating: R Snuff Bottle Connection (1982) Shaolin Drunkard (1983) Close Encounter With the Vampire (1986) Bloody Fists Yuen Woo Ping, who would in time become one of the world’s leading martial arts choreographers, blocked the fight scenes for this Kung Fu action extravaganza. A small Chinese town is being torn apart by a conflict between local farmers and Japanese soldiers of fortune, who have been brought to town to liberate supplies of a rare Chinese herb. A martial arts expert gifted in both Chinese and Japanese fighting disciplines passes through town, and takes it upon himself to settle the feud. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi From China With Death The hero is orphaned early on in From China With Death. The culprit is a powerful warlord, who not only kills the protagonist’s mom and dad, but everyone else in the family. Thirsting for revenge, the young man trains diligently in the martial arts. By the time he’s ready to take on the villain, he’s a lean, mean kung-fu machine. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Dynamo After the death of Bruce Lee in 1973, a slew of imitators invaded the world of the kung fu flick. One of the more well-known is Bruce Li (aka Ho Chung Tao), who continued making sequels and what one might charitably call homages well into the 1980s. Dynamo would, were it just another kung fu flick, rank somewhere in the middle of the pack; if the plot is strictly connect-the-dots, the fight scenes aren’t bad, and there are plenty of them. (Though it should be noted that not all of the fight scenes are actually from this film, a move made presumably to lengthen the movie, which as it is clocks in at a paltry 81 minutes and barely sustains the plot even that long.) The premise–a Bruce Lee lookalike plucked from obscurity to make money for an advertising agency–is awkwardly ironic, and mention of Lee’s recent demise early in the film doesn’t help matters, although it’s probably supposed to. When it is Li onscreen, he’s actually fun to watch, and it’s regrettable that his career is largely founded on imitating Bruce Lee. He tries, but largely lacks the latter’s passionate intensity that was key to his star quality, and the result is a film that’s a pale copy of the real thing. If you want to watch a Bruce Lee movie, then you might as well watch a Bruce Lee movie. ~ Genevieve Williams, Rovi Snuff Bottle Connection In this vintage martial arts adventure, a master fighter (John Liu) is searching for a special snuff bottle, which is no easy task since factions of Russian and Manchu armies are looking for the same bottle. When a rogue warrior with an agenda of his own obtains the bottle, the lone warrior must form an alliance with another kung fu expert, whose loyalty is up for rent. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Shaolin Drunkard Legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo Ping takes the helm for this wild and unconventional epic action adventure. When the Shaolin Temple comes u |
